South Carolina Shut Out at Great American Seafood Cook-off

After this weekend’s Great American Seafood Cook-off, South Carolina remains one of the few qualifying states still chasing the annual crown.

This year’s winner, Beau Schooler, hails from Alaska. That leaves South Carolina, Main, New Jersey and Oklahoma as the only participants never to claim victory in the event’s 12-year history.

South Carolina was represented this year by Ron Andrews of Brays Island Plantataion. He prepared a trio of fried oysters with sweet tea noodles; bacon-wrapped shrimp medallions over fried corn and gag grouper cheek on a hoecake with pesto and tomato jam.

According to The Times-Picayune, the winning chef entered a “nose-to-tail sockeye salmon” dish. Second prize went to a Georgia chef who made roasted lionfish with Sapelo Island clams, and a Louisiana chef who presented seafood nachos finished third.

The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board created the contest in 2004 to promote domestic, sustainable seafood.
